Rubber Part Failure
Rubber part failure is a serious concern when looking to purchase new rubber components. From storage conditions to environmental exposure and a wide range of factors in between, there is a lot to consider before making the final buying decision. When purchasing from Aero Rubber, our consultative sales teams will ask an array of important questions, with the goal of helping you to select the right elastomer for your application and minimize the potential for part failure. To help you with this process, it is important to consider a few basic but crucial aspects of material selection:
Reasons for Rubber Part Failure
1. Chemical Exposure – Exposure to certain chemicals will deteriorate some rubber formulations in different capacities. It is important to know what interactions your rubber material will have given its specific chemical environment. For more information on how specific chemicals react with various elastomers, check out our Chemical Resistance Guide.
2. Temperature and Environment – Elastomers are rated for varying temperature ranges as well as UV and other aspects of environmental exposure. Knowing whether your rubber parts will be used indoors vs outdoors and exposed to sunlight and other elements is an important consideration.
3. Specific Application/Use – The ways in which rubber components can be utilized are very diverse. Will your part be stretched or compressed repeatedly under a heavy load? Will your part be a static fixture to another part? Considerations of application will help determine the strength and elasticity needed for your part.
4. Storage Conditions – Storage conditions can dramatically impact part life. Aero Rubber Company does not offer specific shelf-life expectations, but we can help you select the elastomer and grade of rubber for preserving maximum quality in the proper storage conditions.
